Why Make Communion Bread?
Each week our church body participates in the Lord’s Supper at the end of service. This serves as a weekly reminder of our communion with Christ and with each other. It is a time of prayer and reflection, spiritual nourishment, and remembrance of what God has done through Christ’s atoning work on the cross.
Because we partake in this weekly, our church goes through a lot of communion bread. And since we need so much communion bread for our weekly Lord’s Supper, having a simple recipe to use and make in batches helps our church stay stocked up and ready. Another great thing about this recipe is that it freezes so well.
I like to make 3-4 batches in one session, cool them completely, and then store in the freezer. We keep them in our church freezer to scoop out what we need each week while keeping the rest fresh.
This recipe works great in this way because even after thawing, if you roll them out thin, they stay slightly crispy instead of getting chewy like some recipes can.
1 Corinthians 11:24-26 says, “and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

What is Communion Bread?
Communion Bread is an unleavened bread used in the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper. It serves as an outward element that has been set apart and ordained by Christ himself. And, along with the wine or juice served, these elements are referred to as the body and the blood of Christ. This is a true, yet figurative, statement. They serve as reminders to the believer of the blood of Christ poured out, and the body of Christ broken on the cross. In nature and substance they remain just as they were, bread and wine/juice. (1689 London Baptist Confession)
The First Communion and Institution of the Lord’s Supper
Matthew 26:26-29 – Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
As Jesus was preparing to fulfill His work on earth, and after he had observed the Passover with all 12 disciples, revealing his looming betrayal by Judas Iscariot, he instituted the new observance of Passover; the Lord’s Supper.
The Passover is a remembrance of God delivering His people out of slavery through the ten plagues, culminating with the death of all the firstborn of Egypt not covered by the blood of the lamb as God instructed His people to do. Eventually, the Pharaoh conceded to let God’s people go, and they were so rushed out of there they had no time let their bread leaven.
This was a shadow of Christ; the promised lamb by whose blood we are covered. The firstborn over all creation, and the once for all sacrifice. He is the substance; he came to fulfill all that was prophesied about him in the Old Testament
What a beautiful reminder we receive each time we take of the Lord’s Supper.

How to Make Communion Bread for the Lord’s Supper
When I tell you this recipe is simple, I am not kidding. As a result, it comes together so easily, rolls out like a dream, and bakes in such a way it is virtually error-proof. You just need four ingredients. Flour, water, oil, and salt. That’s it! Let’s make some communion bread.
Ingredients to Make Communion Bread:
1 cup of flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup olive oil
1/3 cup water
Instructions:
First, mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir together until combined well.

Next, transfer to a piece of parchment paper on a flat counter or cutting board.
Roll out to a thinness of about 1/8 of an inch.*

Then, using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into small rectangles/squares.

Carefully slide the parchment paper onto a baking sheet and transfer to a 400 degree preheated oven.
Bake for 10 minutes.
Then, with a spatula, carefully turn the pieces and continue baking for about 3 minutes.

Finally, remove from the oven and carefully slide the parchment paper onto the counter or a cooling rack to cool.

Once completely cool you can transfer to a glass container or freezer bag**.

*TIP: rolling out thin is important in not ending up with chewy pieces once they thaw.
**TIP: These can last for months in the freezer, otherwise you will want to use within the week.
And there you have it! That is how you make communion bread for your church’s Lord’s Supper.
