How do we create a home for God’s glory? What does that even look like on a day-to-basis?
To begin with, your own desire to glorify God in all that you do. A desire only made possible by God’s work in your heart by the Holy Spirit through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Apart from Christ, you would never seek to glorify God in your life.
Ezekiel 36:26-28 says,
” 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.“
If you have been a believer for any amount of time, you notice that your desires have changed. You are now put off by the things you chased after in your dead-man-walking years. You hunger for truth, for righteousness, for holiness. Priorities shift. Marriage means more. Parenting has a stronger mission. People outside your home are viewed with gospel-fresh eyes.
When I think of our home for God’s glory, I think of concentric circles. You know, the kind you see on the top of water when something hits the surface.
Seeking God’s Glory in Scripture
As my husband and I grow in the grace and truth that enters our home, through the loving and sound teaching of our church and our own personal growth in the Word, it ripples outward. It is intentional in discipling of our children through teaching them God’s truth. Singing rich Christ-centered worship songs, and pointing them to the Gospel in our parenting.
You seek to make a home that is Christ-centered. Then, when you invite others in they are witness to the truth, beauty, and goodness of the Gospel. As they leave, and as we go out into the world, all of this overflows. It flows into my husbands workspace, into the community groups we are a part of, into the conversations and interactions we have with the world.
You spend your time pouring into the hearts of the ones who live there, so that by God’s grace and regeneration, the overflow points back to Him.
Colossians 3 is such a great chapter on walking in your new self in Christ, and living that out for God’s glory. It begins with reminding the reader of their new position before a holy God. Then it exhorts you to seek the things that are above, to put off your old self and put on the new self.
Reflecting God’s Glory
Next, it walks you through what that looks like; to put
“on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.“
To God be the Glory
Lastly, it talks about the home. About husbands and wives, children and parents. And then ends with encouraging the reader to work heartily for the Lord, not for man; you are serving the Lord Jesus Christ. In your home, your family, your church, your community, and in the lives you touch everyday.
This passage is not exhaustive on what God’s Word says about the family and the home for His glory. My goal is to more specifically point you to those passages throughout this blog. Each time, reminding you from where your hope comes from. From whom you are even able to do glorify God And in whom you will find true rest.
So, come along with me as we create a home and family for God’s glory.
